Collection Analysis

The Ask

Analyze a fashion collection from a designer or brand active anytime after 1959. The analysis should include an abstract summarizing the major themes of the collection, a minimum of five pages of text analyzing the collection's historical and cultural significance, and images with figure numbers. Additionally, the project must include a bibliography with at least two primary sources, including a link to the fashion show video or still images.

The Process

Selecting the collection: Choose a designer or brand and identify a specific collection with video or at least 40 still images available for reference. Gather primary and secondary sources to support your analysis, including historical context, interviews, and reviews. I chose Vivian Westwood’s F/W 1995 collection “Viva La Cocotte”

Research and Analyze: Investigate the historical and cultural influences of the collection, examining how it reflects the zeitgeist of its time. Identify the designer's fashion philosophy and influences, focusing on aspects directly related to the chosen collection. Study the aesthetic characteristics of the garments, including silhouettes, colors, textiles, and cultural references.

Organize and Write: Write a 150-word abstract summarizing the key themes and findings of your analysis. Develop a detailed five-page analysis that examines the collection’s historical references, cultural significance, and thematic elements. Use proper fashion terminology to describe garments and details. Include and label images from the collection with corresponding figure numbers, placed on a separate page following the main text.
